Independence: the South’s only option

LS #secede billboard in Tuscaloosa July 2014How are things going for you, Mr. and Mrs. Southerner? You are being forced into a “health care” system—ObamaCare–designed to provide worse service for more money; you are being spied on by the NSA and told it is for your own security; you are being (or soon will be) monitored from the skies by domestic drones; you are being slowly and surely deprived of your rights to own firearms and defend yourselves; you are being demographically displaced by Third World aliens with the open aid and sanction of the DC government; you are being told that you are a vile “racist” if you don’t accept tolerance, diversity, and multiculturalism; you are being forced to give your tacit consent to the killing of millions of unborn children every year; you are being forced to accept homosexual “marriage” as normal; you are watching the faith of your Christian fathers be driven from the public square; you are being deprived of your wealth through inflation; you are being robbed blind by the cabal of international bankers; and you are being told that it is “patriotic” to send your sons and daughters off to fight wars against “enemies” who actually pose no threat to the USA. But hey, at least you still live in “the freest country in the world.”

I haven’t heard much from old Lee “God Bless the USA” Greenwood lately, have you?

But there is a man who got it right forty-something years ago and that was then-Alabama Governor George C. Wallace. He proclaimed that there was not a dime’s worth of difference between the Democrats and Republicans. And in an indirect way, Wallace was telling us that looking to Washington, DC, was a futile exercise, especially for his naturally conservative fellow Southerners.

Wait . . . you mean that a conservative GOP victory at the polls in 2014 and/or 2016 won’t turn all this around and make the USA right and whole again? No, Mr. and Mrs. Southerner, it won’t. In fact, most of the things being inflicted on you now (see list above) have been pushed by both major parties on the national level. If you are a “conservative,” as most Southerners claim to be, you have been fooled. But when you come to understand the nature of modern conservatism, it will all begin to make sense to you. And you won’t be happy with those who have taken you for fools.

Long ago, Rev. Robert Lewis Dabney, a Presbyterian divine and Confederate officer on Stonewall Jackson’s staff, wrote this of American (i.e. yankee) Conservatism:

“[American Conservativism] is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation. What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today one of the accepted principles of conservatism … American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition … Its impotency is not hard, indeed, to explain. It is worthless because it is the conservatism of expediency only, and not of sturdy principle. It intends to risk nothing serious for the sake of the truth, and has no idea of being guilty of the folly of martyrdom … The only practical purpose which it now subserves in American politics is to give enough exercise to Radicalism to keep it ‘in wind,’ and to prevent its becoming pursy and lazy from having nothing to whip.”

The upshot of all this is simple, really. Place no trust in Washington for your temporal salvation. It is broken and beyond reform. Neither place trust in the GOP or Democrat establishments. Both are corrupt and self serving.

So, what can you do, Mr. and Mrs. Southerner, to get the weight of an oppressive central government off your backs? We in The League of the South have an answer. Turn your attention to your State and local governments. Do you know your State representative and senator? If not, look them up and get ready to pester them until you drive home your point. And what point is that, you ask?

The point is this: We want out from under the oppressive heel of Washington, DC. The Democrat-Republican regime that controls DC cannot be reformed simply because those who most need reforming control the avenues that lead to reform. They will not allow the people to reform them out of their position of wealth, power, and influence.

You must convince your State legislatures that they, as representatives of the citizens, possess the power of sovereignty within the borders of your State. Moreover, the legislature must be made to understand that it may legitimately tell the federal government to back off of any and all policies, acts, and judgments that are detrimental to the interest of your State. If the DC regime does not comply, then the State(s) must not back down even if it means serious confrontation. If you don’t have State legislators with backbones it is high time you put them into office.

The ultimate step in regaining our ancient liberties as Southerners is of course secession and independence. We in The League have since our inception argued for this solution simply because it removes us completely from control by the DC regime. After all, if you have deemed something beyond reform (as we have indeed deemed the regime) then why fool around with half measures? Take it all the way and be done with it.

As that great South Carolinian and Father of Southern nationalism, William Barnwell Rhett wrote in 1851: “The South must be free, or the South must perish.” That was true in Rhett’s day and it is also true in ours. The DC regime will not deviate from its current course, and that course leads indeed to perdition and to the loss of our liberty and prosperity. Southern independence is a necessity if we are to have a bright future for ourselves and our descendants.

We Southerners are a distinct and unique people with our own culture and heritage. We don’t belong in a union with “those people” (as R.E. Lee called the yankees). We are too different in our worldview to be yoked to them. As you ponder the path you are forced to walk by this regime, giving sanction to every perversion under the sun, take to heart the advice given by Rhett on the eve of The War of Northern Aggression: “Is not a whole life of endurance of unconstitutional oppression, enough for any wisdom in delay – too much, for safety or honor? How long shall we stand, the resistless and despised victims of [the regime’s] . . . fanaticism and rapacity? How long shall we cry ‘wait!’ whilst the [regime] . . . advances in power and insolence; and each successive year brings her nearer to the consummation of her policy of domination over us, and over this continent?”

Thus we Southerners in the early twenty-first century find ourselves in the same proverbial boat our ancestors were in. Except today the enemy is more vicious and the stakes are much higher. If we cannot re-exert control over our States then we cannot hope to succeed. Therefore, we must be relentless in driving home our point of the survival, well being, and independence of the Southern people to our elected State officials. And if they won’t hear us, shout louder until they do. And if they still close their eyes and ears to us, replace them with someone who will receive our message. But don’t do this alone; recruit your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to join you. And you—and they—should join us in The League of the South. With numbers and organization, we can win and the South can be free.

  1. The leviathan corporation known as the United States of America needs to die. It has become an anathema of epic proportions to the principles of liberty. Cast if off to ash heap of history.
